Inspired by his work at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia during World War II, Peter Denton established Denton Vacuum with the purpose of being an innovator in thin film deposition technology. Today, Denton is proud to offer state of the art deposition and etch solutions that utilize our proprietary technology.
In this video, see the story of Denton Vacuum from the people who lived it. Watch Frank Cumbo – Denton CEO, Peter Denton – Chairman of the Board, and Henry Marques – a 40-year career machinist at Denton tell how the company was founded and what makes it successful.
Video Transcript
Peter Denton: I’m Peter Denton, I’m the Chairman of the Board of Denton Vacuum, LLC, based here in Moorestown, New Jersey. I started with the company that my parents owned when I was 31 years old, in 1977.
Frank Cumbo: Frank Cumbo, President and CEO of Denton Vacuum. I started working with Denton in October 2015, so it’s been almost nine years now.
Henry Marques: My name is Henry Marques, and my title is a machinist. I started working with Denton Vacuum in 1979.
Peter: My father was the guy that put the Army in optical coating during World War II. They did that at the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia in 1941, 1942. And that’s what he did. At the end of the war, he and everybody that was involved was laid off. He started a company called Optical Film Engineering, which is a pretty good description of what we do today, all these years later.
Frank: So, there’s a couple of things that changed at Denton since I started. One is, I think we’ve instituted a culture that is not afraid to fail. One thing, a lot of people think that they may lose their job or that you won’t be successful if you fail. I tend to think just the opposite, that if you don’t try new things and you don’t fail, you’re not going to create new things. So we want to get a sense of like collective intelligence trying to try new things. And if you fail, it’s okay.
Henry: Lots of good people in here. We work as a team.
Peter: In this business we’re all technical people, and there’s always new stuff happening. There’s always customers coming to us and saying “We have this problem. Can you solve it for us?” And we’re all interested in these problems and building new things to do new stuff.
